Mexico City (AP) – Boxer Julio Seza Chavez Jr. has been deported to Mexico, where he hopes for alleged cartel ties, and arrests in the US continue his visa and lies on a green card application.

Chavez was handed over by authorities and granted a prison outside the city of Elmosillo in northern Sonora, officials spoke on condition of anonymity on Tuesday as they were not permitted to speak publicly about the matter.

Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum confirmed the news at her Daily press conference.

“I understand that he has been deported. I don’t know if it’s yesterday or this morning, but I’ve been informed that he’s arrived in Mexico,” Sinbaum said.

Chavez, 39, had a warrant arrested in Mexico over his relationship with the Sinaloa cartel. Mexican Attorney General Alejandro Gerz Manelo said the investigation into Chavez began in 2019.

The boxer, son of Mexican boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez, was arrested on July 3rd, a few days after a prominent battle with Jake Paul in California.

Sinbaum said he wanted the boxer to be deported to face his charges after his arrest.

Chavez’s father was a massive celebrity in the 1980s and ’90s, mixing social circles with drug dealers and claiming he was friends with drug doctor Amado Carrillo Fuentes.

The iconic fighter defended his son after his arrest, but has not been spoken publicly since his deportation.

Young Chavez has fought drug addiction for many of his boxing career, failing drug tests, providing a halt, and has been widely criticised for his intermittent dedication to the sport while he is lacking in weight.

Chavez won the WBC middleweight title in 2011 and has defended him three times. He shared the ring with generational greats Canelo Alvarez and Sergio Martinez, who lost to both.

In 2012 he was convicted of drunk driving in Los Angeles and sentenced to 13 days in prison. In January 2024, he was arrested on a gun charge. Police said he owns two AR-style ghost rifles. He was later released on a $50,000 bond and on the condition that he went to a residential drug treatment facility. The case is still pending, and Chavez regularly reports his progress.
