Tenant rights attorney and Highland Park native Isabel Jurado declared victory Thursday in a scathing social media message.
“Like [President-Elect Donald] “Trump, he has resorted to fear-mongering, red-baiting, misogynistic and racist dog whistles to divide us,” she wrote.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Filipino-American progressive’s victory makes him the first person of non-Latino descent to hold the 14th District since 1985, when the late Richard Alatorre won the district. will be given seats.
Jurado himself was not immune to scandal. When asked by a UCLA student earlier this year about her stance on police abolition, she was recorded saying, “What’s a rap verse? It’s the police.”

As of Friday, Jurado had an 11 percentage point lead over de Leon in the district that stretches from downtown Los Angeles to Eagle Rock.
The former U.S. senator and Los Angeles mayoral candidate has yet to publicly concede the race.
