Kelly Clarkson reveals some secrets about her time in “American Idol” and “Voice.”
On March 27th, the talk show host appeared as a guest on the “Don’t Lie with Kylie Kels” podcast. During the sit-in, Clarkson looked back on her career from her start as the first winner of “American Idol” from 2002 until ever.
When chatting about the singers who captured the hearts of the country in Season 1 of “American Idol,” Kelce read a tweet from a fan who said, “It’s wild to me that “American Idol” found America’s best vocalist in his first attempt.”
Clarkson laughed after hearing the compliment before revealing that she was watching her time on the show differently than her fans.
“I didn’t know it was a TV show until my third audition,” she shared. “No one knew it would be something.”
After the show, Clarkson released hits such as “un u bean gone” and “breakkaway” and won three Grammys before returning to the world of singing competition. In 2018, she became a coach in Season 14 of NBC’s “The Voice.” She stayed in the red chair that spun through season 21. Clarkson took a short break and coached again in season 23 and marked the final season as coach.
“If he hadn’t moved around the country and been a single mother of two, he wouldn’t have quit the show,” she explained, referring to her 2022 divorce from her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock.
Clarkson has tied up with coach Jennifer Hudson, but she said there are coaches who have “hate” the show of singing competitions and contestants like her.
“In most cases, all the coaches are incredible. But they shared without name, ‘Oh, OK, you don’t deal with them.’
Kelly met John, an 88-year-old Korean War veteran, and recently achieved his goal of graduating from Fordham Business School in Manhattan 68 years after he originally enrolled! John dialed in with his granddaughter Claire to share why he was inspired to complete his degree after dropping out in 1961, and Claire has shared an overwhelmingly positive response ever since posting a heartwarming graduation video for Tiktok.
“The people who were really mean were coaches,” she continued.
The 42-year-old said it was likely that he wouldn’t return to “voice” any time soon. Clarkson opened in an interview with USA Today in 2023 about the show’s withdrawal.
“Full disclosure, I struggled with a lot of things in my personal life, so I had a lot of smiles on my face at that point,” she said at the time. “I learned a lot about what I can and shouldn’t deal with. It was making this big move when I said ‘goodbye’ to the ‘voice’.
