Los Angeles’ own Kendrick Lamar will be the subject of a new class taught at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Fall 2025 course will be taught by Timothy Welbeck, assistant professor of African Studies and African American Studies. It is called the morale of Kendrick Lamar and Murdo City.
The artist himself, Welbeck also teaches hip-hop and black culture and the cityless course for young men: stories of hip-hop and alienation. ”
“Kendrick Lamar is one of the main voices of his generation and has a keen ability to articulate the various dynamics towards black life and self-realization.
This course looks at the life of a Pulitzer Prize winner through an afrocentric lens by examining the socioeconomic and cultural conditions of his hometown Compton and “urban policies that shape his musical narrative.”
“This course explores the evolution of West Coast hip hop and its impact on Lamar’s sound and storytelling, diving deep into his discography,” explained the outlet.
The class also includes guest speakers who worked with the “Not Like Us” rapper.
This year has been a big deal for hip hop stars. He not only headlines the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show, but also brought back five Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best Music videos.
In April, he and SZA began their Grand National Tour. It will close on December 10th in Sydney, Australia.
