Knott’s Berry Farm has taken a major step towards resuming one of the most iconic roller coasters, Montezooma’s revenge.
The park confirmed that the Forbidden Fortress, a reimagined version of Montezoma’s Signature Loop: Historic Coaster, has been installed.

Debuting in 1978, Montezooma’s Revenge has been closed since 2022. Knott’s announced an overhaul of its ride last year, but at the time it provided little detail. Montezooma: The new version, renamed The Forbidden Fortress, anchors the redesigned Fiesta Village.
Coasters are a favorite among many thrill seekers and are designated as landmarks by American coaster enthusiasts. The organization recognizes that Montezoma’s revenge is the last commercial ride of its kind in the US and its longest position in its original location.
Only 45 other roller coasters from around the world are designated as ACE landmarks.
The thrill ride “puts passengers out of the station at 55 mph and rises to the top of the 76-foot, 360° loop and 148-foot tower.”
According to Knot’s website, after a moment of weightlessness, the train zooms backwards through the tower, passing through the loop, passing through the second 112-foot tower, and through the tower to the station.
