The Los Angeles City Council on Friday approved changes to its first proposed venue plan for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics.
The city created the current venue plan in 2017, but revisions to the venue plan were announced in the summer. The amendment requires city consent. The city council directed staff on Friday to move forward with these recommendations.
Amidst the summer’s proposed change and approved Friday, basketball will move to Inglewood’s Int’t’ Dome, gymnasts will move to Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles and swim at Sophie Stadium in Inglewood.
Council action added two new sports to the LA28 Games. Flag Football made its Olympic debut in 2028, and Lacrosse is returning to its medal sports lineup for the first time in over a century.

Members of the Ad Hoc Committee met earlier this week on Wednesday to approve the changes. They also asked LA28, the private company that oversees the game, to conduct an independent investigation by June 30th to examine the economic impact of the proposed changes.
“The arena in downtown Los Angeles offers more seating with more hospitality facilities, allowing more audiences to see one of the game’s more marquee sports.”
City leaders say the updated plans will bring in $162 million, combined with additional revenue and savings.
Council Chairman Marquez Harris Dawson said if LA28 and the city suffer a loss due to the game, the city is hooked at $270 million. Some of the debt is paid by the state, but ultimately in the hands of LA.
“We can’t afford it under any circumstances,” Harris Dawson said Wednesday.
If approved, the International Olympic Committee Executive Committee will review the final plan on April 9th.
