The owner of a coffee shop in Los Angeles is planning to raise beverage prices in response to President Donald Trump’s new tariffs on imports, including coffee beans.
Owners of small neighborhood coffee shops that import most of their coffee from several countries in Latin America and Africa estimate price increases of $1-2 per cup.
Eric DeHaven, owner of House Coffee Company in Westadams, said uncertainty was volatile for him and his business.
“A lot of the countries in which the beans come from may not be entirely tariffs, so perhaps 10% is what we’re hearing,” Dehaven.
According to the owner of House Coffee Company, when more than 99% of American drinks are imported, they are already working on nearly record prices for imported coffee.
“We were expecting a rise of about 50 cents to $1 per cup at the coffee shop, but now we expect it to be possible that there will be more increases as tariffs are added,” Dehaven said.
AJ Barish, owner of the coffee, tea and cocoa conservatory in Culver City, said his business is barely going through now, but he fears that customers will rethink their trip to a coffee shop in the new economy.
“I think in the long run, things will improve,” Barish said. “The fuel will be down, there’s more American jobs.”
