Los Angeles County beaches reopened Wednesday after the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center lifted its tsunami advisory on the West Coast, officials said.
“The LA County Beach and Harbor Department has opened toilets, access ways and parking on the beaches it manages, and is opening earlier than expected to park in Marina del Rey. Dockweiler RV Park is also open,” the department said in a news release.
Despite the reopening, authorities are urging their citizens to stay away from the water due to dangerous conditions.
“The main thing to highlight is that the currents are very strong in all coastal waters today,” the National Weather Service Los Angeles office said in a X post.
Residents are also encouraged to monitor guidance from local emergency staff.
As a precaution, several Southern California beaches and piers were closed Tuesday evening as a precaution after a powerful earthquake struck around 80 miles from Russia’s east coast. Since Japan’s devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan in 2011, the strongest earthquake in the region could rank as the sixth strongest ever recorded.
The tsunami consultation was initially expected to remain until Saturday, but was cancelled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Wednesday morning.
