What do you know

The lawsuit seeks to recover costs and damages from the second most destructive wildfire recorded in California. During Santa Ana wind power generation on the evening of January 7, the Eton fire surfaced several weeks later, with part of a fire that became part of an investigation into how 14,000 fires were launched. Edison International said it is “examining all possibilities, including the possibility that SCE equipment may be involved.”

Los Angeles County filed a lawsuit against Edison, Southern California on Wednesday over the fatal Eaton fire in the Altadena area of northeastern Los Angeles.

The lawsuit, appointing SoCal Edison and Edison International, seeks to recover costs and damages from the second most destructive wildfire recorded in California. According to Calfire, one of the several that occurred on January 7th in the Santa Ana Wind Storm on January 7th destroyed 9,400 structures, resulting in 17 deaths.

County parks, nature centers, trails and other community infrastructure were damaged in a 14,000-acre fire, according to a county news release that released the lawsuit.

“Many county departments and employees are responding and continuing to support residents affected by the fire’s destruction,” the county said in a statement. “The county is staffed quickly and continues to provide resources at the Altadena disaster recovery center, helping residents and businesses navigate the widespread difficulties they face due to the fire. County incidents are crucial to the recovery and rebuilding process of communities, including residential and businesses.

The NBCLA contacted Socal Edison for comment. Edison officials have previously said that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The lawsuit alleges that the witnesses, photos and videos show “a direct fire on Eton Canyon’s SCE transmission line.” Edison International said that videos, photos and more were reviewed in early February to determine which Eaton fire began, and that “we are investigating all possibilities, including the possibility that SCE equipment may have been involved.”

A new video shows electric sparks on the hill above Altadena. This is currently being investigated as growing into a massive Eaton fire that tore the community apart. Eric Leonard reports NBC4 News on Monday, January 27th, 2025 at 4pm.

Several videos were revealed in days and weeks of the fire that appeared to show the first flames at Eton Canyon near the utility infrastructure. After the Eton Fire began, SoCal Edison notified that California utilities had faults on their transmission lines around the time the fire began on a very windy night in Altadena.

In a letter to the CPUC on February 6th, Edison said, “Photo evidence of the tower at the end of the idle mesa-Silmer transmission line shows signs of potential arcing and damage to two of the three idle conductors.”

The county said it still counts the costs and damages from the fire and recovery in Eton, but estimated it would reach at least hundreds of millions of dollars.

The lawsuit was also filed by the city of Pasadena, and similar claims were practically filed.
