The Los Angeles County Fire Department captain is accused of filing a fraudulent long-term disability insurance claim against the injury prosecutor. He says that it couldn’t happen because he wasn’t working at the time, the county attorney’s office announced Friday.
Thomas Merryman, 44, is allegedly scamming colonial life and accident insurance companies over $25,000 by submitting forged documents containing forged doctor memos and documents that have been altered from another firefighting commander.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Merryman faces each of his insurance fraud and false human rights, and one of two felony counts, both of which are counterfeit.
The complaint was filed for a warrant on August 8th, and his arrest is scheduled for September 9th at the Clara Shortridge Fortz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles. Officials say Merryman is currently resident of Georgetown, Texas.

“A claim for a false disability under my watch will not be tolerated, particularly by the first responders who kept our county safe,” District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. “False healthcare claims increase premiums and make it difficult for legitimate injured people to access profits. The message to civil servants who are abusing the system is clear. We’re looking at you.”
If convicted, Merryman faces up to five years in state prisons.
The case is being charged by Associate District Attorney Arunas Sodonis of the Healthcare Fraud Division. The investigation included the District Attorney’s Office’s Investigation Office, in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and other agencies.
