11 months after being heavily damaged by an early morning fire, Los Angeles County Fire Station 164 in Huntington Park will reopen Friday.
The fire burned a two-storey building in the 6000 block of Santa Fair Venue around 4am on May 1, 2024. The fire was included about 20 minutes later, but not before causing major damage to the facility.
County Superintendent Janice Hahn said it was completely ruined when she went to the station to investigate the damage.
“This is one of the busiest things in my district. I’m answering calls in Southeast LA as well as Huntington Park,” Hearn said in a statement at the time. “The smell is irritating. Many of the stations have been completely destroyed. The lights on the ceiling are melting.”
Hearn said the firefighters were asleep before the fire broke out. She said that a good Samaritan had ringed the station doorbell to warn firefighters before the flames got worse.
“Our firefighters couldn’t reach voting supplies, so many of them fought the fire with t-shirts and flip-flops until a nearby station responded,” Hahn said.
No injuries have been reported in the flames. Firefighters have been working from temporary facilities for nearly a year as the station is trapped in ruins.
In August, Hearn introduced a motion approved by the Board of Supervisory Board to promote $16 million reconstruction and station renovations. According to Hahn’s office, the work was “finished at a record time.”
On Friday afternoon, Hearn will be joined by county fire chief Anthony Marrone, Huntington Park Mayor Arturo Flores and county internal services director Michael Ouffu at the ceremony officially reopening the rebuilt station at 6208 Alameda St.
