The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is launching its latest public safety campaign, “Emergency Lighting? Pull Right.”
It aims to educate drivers about the importance of piloting near emergency vehicles and being vigilant when pulling to the right when an emergency vehicle is approaching.
California law requires the driver to pull to the right and stop when an emergency vehicle approaches with an operating light and siren.
“Too often we run into drivers who are completely ignoring sirens,” Sheriff Robert Luna said in a statement.
“This campaign is about saving lives by making sure that all drivers know how to respond when they see flashing lights in their rearview mirrors.”
The campaign highlights the action drivers that you take when emergency vehicles are nearby. they are:
Keep the music at a reasonable volume, avoid distraction and listen to the sirens and see the flashing lights. Pull to the right. If it’s safe, signal the vehicle to the right side of the road. Stop and wait. Leave the emergency vehicle in halt until it passes or is instructed. Do not block intersections. At the intersection and when an emergency vehicle approaches, continue and hand over.
To reinforce this message, LASD will share educational content across social media platforms and conduct public service announcements.
“To recognize and respond appropriately is not just to follow the law that we are responsible members of our community,” Luna said. It can make the difference between life and death. ”
