The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office apologized Sunday for what the agency called an “aggressive and inappropriate” social media post following the US strike at Iran’s nuclear and military sites.
The apology issued Sunday evening stated, “Our minds are turning our hearts to the victims and families affected by the recent bombings in Iran. Though this tragic event occurred overseas, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department is closely monitoring the situation along with local, state and federal partners.”
The first post, in which the department increased patrols at the venues of worship, and stated that there was no known threat to Los Angeles County at the time, was deleted. Images from deleted posts have been shared online.
In a Sunday evening post, the department has issued the statement to “officially apologise for an offensive and inappropriate social media post recently posted to the department’s social media platform regarding ongoing conflicts in Iran. The post is unacceptable and does not reflect the views of Sheriff Robert G. Luna or the department.
“As law enforcement, we do not comment on foreign policy or military issues. Our mission remains focused on protecting public safety and serving diverse communities. We fully recognize that the words and messages we share have weight. As law enforcement experts, we are entrusted with a public responsibility position, and the trust requires us to learn accurately, and to prevent such incidents from happening again.”
The department said it has begun an internal review to determine how to create the post.
The strike late Saturday targeted three sites and raised the stakes of the Israeli-Iranian war. Iran’s atomic energy organization later confirmed an attack on all three sites.

Israel previously launched an attack on Iranian sites on June 13th. Israeli officials said strikes were needed to stop what Iran calls an imminent threat to build a nuclear bomb.
Iranian officials who argued that the nuclear program was peace had warned the US to stay away from the conflict. Until Saturday, Washington was helping to defeat Iran’s strike against Israel, but had not launched a direct attack on Iran.
