LA must hand over protest-related documents to Congress by Friday – NBC Los Angeles

Until Friday, the city of Los Angeles will need to take over documents and communications records related to the remorse protests to the U.S. House of Representatives as the Congressional Committee began an investigation into Gov. Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass.

James Kommer, chairman of the House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is investigating the recruitment and base handling of the demonstrations that began to occur on June 6th following public immigration enforcement and arrests.

Comer, a Republican House member from Kentucky, wrote to two Democrat leaders on June 13, claiming that the city was unable to stop violence and looting by protesters while hampering the federal government’s deportation policy.

“Governor Gavin Newsom and yourself have relied on protesting President Trump’s actions to suppress the violence caused by the Los Angeles mob and falsely condemning the actions of violent rioters,” Kommer told Mayor Bass in a letter.

The committee requested that by June 27th all documents and communications relating to the demonstration be passed between two offices of the state law enforcement, local law enforcement agencies and federal organizations.

Bass and Newsom were asked to provide “all records and communications, including videos and dispatch logs on weapons used by rioters (including rocks and delicate blocks).”

The looming deadline came as the Department of Homeland Security said it had arrested 1,618 undocumented immigrants from the LA area between June 6 and 22.

While often forced arrests have occurred in the public, 787 people have been arrested for law enforcement officers, obstruction or assaulting illegal legislators, immigration customs enforcement officers told NBC News that there may be some overlap between the two groups as officer attacks could occur during immigrant arrests.

In the letter, the committee chair said that Congress has “broad powers” to investigate “anytime, at any time.”

It is not clear whether the subpoena was issued for the record, but the Congressional Committee can, in this case, hold the people who have not violated, Newom and Bass, lightly empty.

On Tuesday, House Democrats elected former Long Beach Mayor Rep. Robert Garcia as a new ranking member on the House Oversight Committee. Garcia has been a voice critic of the Trump administration and its immigration policies, but it is still not clear how much influence Garcia will be able to use to protect his Californians in the first few days of the new post.
