Three years from today, the torch will be lit up in LA.
Monday is three years after the opening ceremony of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The city hosted its third Olympics (1932 and 1984) and will return to the United States for the first time in Atlanta since 1996.
To celebrate in three years, LA28 saw the 2028 Olympics competition schedule for the first time.
Field hockey, basketball, rugby sevens, water polo, handball and cricket will be the first sports to begin at the LA Olympics, with competitions that begin on July 12, 2028, two days before the opening ceremony.
Canoe Slalom is the only sport to be held on July 14th (Day 0), otherwise reserved for the opening ceremony. Instead of being held in LA, canoe slalom and softball will be held in Oklahoma City.
July 15th (Day 1) is when the action is fully underway, and there is a twist. Athletics and swimming will exchange typical locations in Olympic schedules, compete for the first week of athletics and move into the second week of swimming. The marathon will still be held on the final weekend of the Olympics.
The first medals at the 2028 LA Olympics will be handed out at a triathlon on July 15th along the Venice Beach coastline. The swimming will be held at Sophie Stadium on July 30th (16th day) after the Olympics. It will be branded as 2028 Stadium during the game.
July 29th (Day 15) will be the busiest day on the Olympic podium, with 16 gold and bronze medal matches being held in team sports and 19 individual medal events.
LA28 said a more detailed schedule for medal events and gender orders will be released later this year.
