City crews clarified the destruction and destruction in downtown Los Angeles on Monday following a weekend filled with protests in response to an immigrant raid.
Workers removed five unmanned Waymo vehicles that fired on Los Angeles Avenue near the 101 Highway, erasing graffiti on the walls near the federal building and the town hall.
Los Angeles resident John Perez said he came to the protest location to “represent the peace aspect.”
“I’m very hurt, I’m very hurt by this, and I know the overwhelming majority of Angeleno doesn’t want this,” Perez said. “I know the rage of the crowd on the streets, but I’m not going to solve anything.”
Los Angeles police have declared downtown LA as an “illegal rally” following a night of chaos in the area.
According to a detailed breakdown of LAPD released Monday, 21 people were arrested by LAPD officials on Sunday, and one protester faces accusations of attempted murder with a Molotov cocktail. According to the LAPD, five LAPD officers were injured and five LAPD horses were minor injuries.
Just as many of the graffiti expressed opposition to the attack and the Trump administration, some expressed concern over vandalism and violence.
“It feels like a war zone. My city feels like a war zone,” said a bystander named Tony.
Perez also urged protesters to “pull back a bit” and “reevaluate why they are doing this.”
“I’ve been in this city for 50 years and have seen it burn before, and this is one of the worst times in our history,” Perez said.
