Union leaders face federal accusations after being arrested Friday during immigration enforcement work in Los Angeles.
David Fuerta, 58, the leader of the United Nations California (SEIU) service employee, has been charged with felony conspiracy to obstruct an officer, according to court documents. He maintained federal custody in Los Angeles on Monday and was scheduled to make his first court appearance in the afternoon.
This crime will be punished by a maximum of six years in federal prisons.
Furta was arrested Friday, according to criminal charges. Several protesters responded to workplaces, including Fuerta.
According to the U.S. Lawyer’s Office, Huerta intentionally blocked agents’ access to the workplace by blocking the vehicle. The union leader and others sat in front of them at the “only vehicle entrance of the business,” according to the complaint.
Furta faced law enforcement officers who tried to keep him out of the way and when he refused to move, he pushed him to the ground and took him into custody, the complaint said.
Fuerta made a statement after his arrest.
“What happened to me isn’t about me. It’s about something much bigger,” Fuerta said. “This is a way we stand together as a community and resist the injustice that is happening. Hardworking people and our families and members of our community are treated like criminals. We all have to oppose this insanity. This is not justice. This is injustice.
Homeland Security officials say Friday’s immigration enforcement project led to dozens of arrests in the Los Angeles area.
“Today, alongside our partner law enforcement, Ice Officers and Agents executed four federal search warrants at three locations in central Los Angeles. Approximately 44 people were arrested administratively and one arrest was blocked.
A demonstration was held in Los Angeles following Friday’s business and other recent immigration enforcement projects. Dozens of people were arrested over the weekend in connection with the violence that broke out in downtown Los Angeles after protests outside the federal detention center Sunday.
