For the first time in modern Olympic history, the opening ceremony of the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics will be held at the same time by two stadiums.
The ceremony will be divided into the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at Expo Park and the Sophie Stadium at Inglewood.
The official announcement means the Coliseum will hold its third record Olympics. It opened in 1923 and held the opening ceremonies of the 1932 and 1984 summer conferences.
The Coliseum will hold its closing ceremony on its own.
“For over a century, the Coliseum has been a landmark host to some of the most iconic moments in the history of sports,” said Mayor La Karen Bass. “That story continues in 2028 as our city and our region welcome the world to become the biggest Olympic and Paralympic games.”

Meanwhile, Sophie Stadium, which will be called Englewood’s Stadium during the match, will host its first Olympics in 2028. The stadium will open in September 2020 and will host the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.
Sofi also hosts gaming swimming events.
“As a proud LA28 venue, Inglewood is honored to have played such a pivotal role in the 2028 game,” said Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts. “Our stadium is one of the most impressive in the world and will bring together to celebrate the opening ceremony of the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics and provide an incredible experience for millions of in-person fans.”
This is the first time the opening ceremony has been split into two venues. The format is not clear yet.
