The Tesla Diner, which is set to open in Hollywood, will be run by longtime Los Angeles chef Eric Greenspan, announced this week.
Greenspan will be the chef’s dish for a new diner set that will open on Santa Monica Boulevard, which features a drive-in movie theatre and a 75 V4 supercharged stall, according to a post from self-identified Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt.
Greenspan refused to comment or confirm his involvement in the project, telling the Times that he “I don’t know if there’s a lot to talk about.”
However, Tesla’s Elon Musk appears to be confirming employment and responded to merit with X. “It’ll be cool.”
A Le Cordon Bleu alumni and patina veteran, Greenspan began the LA cooking scene in 2007 at the California and French restaurant “Filling Factory.” He also developed a new school American cheese, a product currently on offer in burgers and sandwiches in Los Angeles.
“GreenSpan is a charismatic guy with a big, diminished presence and a huge personality that can distract you from his considerable intelligence,” writes Amy Scattergood, former editor of the La Times Food section.
Greenspan frequently serves as a restaurant consultant and lends culinary insights to projects like Weight Watchers Cafe and Mr. Beast Burger. It has not yet been seen whether Greenspan will serve as the head chef at Tesla Diner or simply serve as a consultant advising aspects of the menu.
Another possible connection to restaurants reported by the New York Times is influential restaurant manager Bill Chate, who is listed as manager of Zero2one LLC.
Chait helped shape the city’s diet through activities such as Bestia, République and The Rose, via Sprout Restaurant Group, which left in 2015.
More recently, Chait took Fannie’s hands at the Academy Museum’s Film Museum, Tartine, The Shuttered Zozo La Brea, and the new Chinatown restaurant that was first born.
Chait and Greenspan will not only be creating news related to Tesla Diner this week.
In another article in The New York Times where he interviewed the LA chef about the project, Walter Manzke, owner of Chef Republique, said it “sounds exciting,” and that James Beard Award-winning Patty Chef Margarita Manzke, co-owner of his wife, République, agreed.
“The other day she said she wanted to buy a Tesla, so we can tell you what side she is on,” Manzuke said.
Manzukes faced immediate backlash and in a subsequently deleted Instagram post, he wrote that the statement was never political.
