Los Angeles Police Department officials advanced into federal immigration operations Tuesday morning in response to a possible lure in downtown Los Angeles.
According to a news release from the LAPD, officers were dispatched to 9th Avenue and Spring Street around 9:10am after a 911 call reported possible ongoing invitations.
“The initial comments on the phone showed that several individuals were trying to detain people without identifying themselves, prompting concern from bystanders,” the release said.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers accompanied by the supervisor discovered that the crowd was growing and increasingly upset. Eventually people spill over the streets, creating “unstable circumstances and serious public safety hazards,” according to the LAPD.
The situation was exacerbated by DTLA morning traffic and crowds, authorities added.
Additional units were requested to manage traffic and ensure everyone was safe. However, federal agents were able to hold certain individuals under control.

“At one point, a partially handcuffed woman approached and stood near an LAPD officer,” the news release said. “A few minutes later, federal agents approached the woman’s control and assumed it.”
“LAPD was not involved in her attention or arrest,” the department said. “The role of the LAPD was limited to maintaining order and public safety.”

Video obtained by KTLA shows federal agents forcibly detaining someone who was facing downwards on the street. Passersby squealed the corner and saw multiple people document the incident.
In another recording, filmed by the same woman, she approaches one of the masked agents and asks if he is with the FBI, as his best shows.
“you [with the] FBI, like the truth? Does the woman have a badge instead of entering a truck where the agent didn’t respond and instead had no license plates?
The video was captioned with expletive, “No ID, No license plate, Just roam on a large scale.”

The woman has also heard responding LAPD officers ask why federal agents haven’t stopped people from detaining, and local organization Unión Del Barrio has posted a video claiming to show “Collaborat” to LAPD officers[ing] With an ice invitation. ”
However, the department says it will not enforce, participate or support citizen immigration enforcement, a policy that has been in place for decades.
“Since 1979, departmental policies have prohibited officers from launching police lawsuits just to determine the status of people’s immigration,” a LAPD news release concludes. “The role of LAPD is focused on public safety, crime prevention and community trust, regardless of the immigration situation.”
According to LA police, federal agents did not inform them of pre-planned enforcement activities. The only reason local officials responded was the first call for reported lunatics, authorities revealed.
No arrests were made by LAPD. The number of people detained by federal agents is unknown.
