According to police and sources, the Bay Area rapper was shot after refusing to hand over the watch during an armed robbery inside an East Hollywood recording studio later Thursday.
Stacey Gilton, who rapped under the name “Lil Yi,” suffered two gunshot wounds to the chest when the attacker interrupted the performer’s recording session and requested a watch, according to a LAPD source who requested anonymity to discuss the open case.
Gilton was taken to a local hospital for surgery, and although his condition was critical, sources said it was stable.
LAPD spokesman Officer Drake Madison said police were flagged and pointed to the scene of the shooting in the 4500 block of Melrose Avenue just after 10pm on Thursday. They found the victim injured by the suspect, who Madison said in a statement, “firing several rounds at the victim during an attempted robbery.”
The officers obtained a brief description of the suspect, a black man in his mid- to late 20s. No arrests had been announced in the shooting as of early Friday afternoon, but police said they were not motivated by gang competition.
Police are said to be investigating the possibility that the robbery could be a setup organized by another rapper.
Gilton, from San Francisco’s Fillmore area, proudly promotes his roots in a 2022 interview on the website of leading music journalist Jeff Wyce. According to an interview, he self-released the single “War” in 2016. It has won nearly 5 million streams on Spotify.
Gilton believes he gave the song a “platform.” It gave me a fanbase that connected with lyrics about wrestling with sadness and mental health.
The filming is the latest in a string of notable shootings and robberies from music artists.
Local icon Nipsey Hussle was murdered outside a clothing boutique in Southern LA in 2019.
In February 2020, the rising star Pop Smoke was shot in a home break-in after inadvertently posting his location on Instagram’s Hollywood Hills while visiting town from New York.
And in 2022, three rappers – PNB Locke (born Rakim Allen), Keyrich (Kiannerm) of Compton and half-ounce of Inglewood (Rataulicsha O’Brien) were killed in the LA area.
Earlier this week, TMZ reported that influencer and former boyfriend of “Gucci Flip Flops” rapper Bud Baby was shot in the hand during an argument at a strip club near downtown Los Angeles.
