The Los Angeles Police Department is under scrutiny after being accused by officers of making racist and other mischievous comments about their colleagues. The alleged remarks were secretly recorded.
According to an explosive Los Angeles Times investigative report, executives working in LAPD’s recruitment office recorded dozens of conversations over the majority of the year. The LA Times report details about 90 recordings of officers and supervisors intended to speak out openly discrimination against potential recruits and colleagues based on race and orientation.
During one conversation, Latina LAPD officials offered advice on how to fight African Americans.
“You attacked black people with your liver. I heard they got weak liver,” she said. The same officer is said to have described the Latina admin to a colleague as a “wet bag.”

The complaint denounces LAPD Sergeant. Denny John leads the prejudiced joke. In a conversation with his men about Dodgers legend Fernando Valentzera, who died of sepsis shock in 2024, John said he complained, “I know why he died. He ate too many tacos.”
The complaint also reportedly reportedly referred to black people as “monkeys.”
The complaining officer, who was a Latinx for 10 years at work, initially accused anonymously, now handing over dozens of hours of recordings from March to October 2024.
The scandal at LAPD’s recruitment office couldn’t come at a worse time. The military is struggling to recruit new officers, with more than 100 officers expected to leave by next year, dropping the department to the fewest number of officers in nearly 30 years.
