Los Angeles police released a video on Friday from filming his wife Gillian Lauren, author of Weezer bass player Scott Schliner. LAPD said Lauren pointed his gun and fired a gun at an officer this month after he clearly mistaken him for an armed suspect.
Police video spliced together from cameras covered in the officer’s body and surveillance footage showed confusion at the moment leading up to the incident, with 51-year-old Lauren hospitalized with a gunshot wound.
LAPD officials were helping the California Highway Patrol track down the three suspects they wanted on Hit and Run when they met Lauren walking through the backyard of Eagle Rock’s house with a gun.
Videos from the body decoration cameras of several corresponding officers were hampered by fences around Lauren’s garden. The officers could hear him screaming at Lauren to drop the gun for a few minutes. Another recording from a nearby security camera, apparently without sound, appeared to show Lauren raising his gun in a round outdoors.
Audio from a 911 call by one of Lauren’s neighbors showed that she believes that Lauren has been fired by one of the suspects.
“There are three men, one of them shoots her and the officers are now looking for him,” a neighbor can be heard telling the 911 operator. “They’re putting out their guns.”
Lauren was booked and posted on bail on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer. It is unclear whether the case was handed over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. A spokesman for the district attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.
Lauren’s celebrities and the shooting situation sparked debate over whether she was justified to protect her property.
The hit and rank rush that began the incident occurred near 134 Freeway and Figueroa Street. Police soon began receiving 911 calls from neighbors who spotted the suspect trying to hide in their backyard.
Security camera video shows the suspect walking by the pool at his Wald Place home before climbing the hill, ducking out of sight behind a trampoline.
The trio of pursuing officers made a path towards the backyard and climbed the wall onto the fence separating the house from Lauren’s property. The LAPD video shows Lauren walking around the yard in a purple Weezer T-shirt and black tights, wearing a black handgun, looking around thinking she has high vigilance.
Officers on the other side of the fence can hear her screaming to drop the gun, but the helicopter floating above may have prevented her from hearing them.
“We’re trying to help you,” people say. “Drop the gun, you’ll be shot.”
After a few minutes of plea, one officer tells the other that Lauren raised the gun.
“It’s not us, but she just lifted it up,” the officer said.
A moment later, I heard the officer say, “OK, she hugged it,” but soon afterwards the sound of at least six gunshots fired.
After filming, Lauren turns and walks towards her house before the video is blocked.
At Lauren’s request, a neighbor called 911 reported that he was shot by three men standing on the other side of the fence.
“He was in my yard, and there he shot her,” the caller said.
Lauren can be heard in the background of the call.
“I had a gun and he said: I put that gun down, I put that gun down. I said I’d put your F-gun,” she said. “Yeah, then he shot me.”
Lauren stayed at home about an hour after the shooting, but eventually began to face LAPD officers waiting outside.
The video noted that she shot her in the arm and showed officers lying on the street as they handcuffed her. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police said they had recovered a Glock 9mm handgun and a used shell case from the scene.
Police said one of the suspects of Hit and Run was taken into custody but was released after suing the charges.
Lauren is scheduled to appear in court at the end of the month.
