A musical collaboration born in Los Angeles is currently becoming a hot topic.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar has chosen local mariachi singer Deila Barrera (49) for his latest album “GNX”.
The Compton native first heard Barrera sing at Dodger Stadium during Game 1 of the World Series. Barrera was performing in memory of the late Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela.
“He’s one of my angels, my friend,” Barrera said.
Being able to perform on stage has been a dream of the mariachi singer since childhood.
“I’ve dreamed of it since I was a child.”
She grew up in the Mexican state of Sonora and moved to Los Angeles with her family at age 18, where she continued to find new opportunities.
“My mother, sister, and I sang every month to earn money, pay the rent, and eat,” Barrera explained.
The singer’s name has now risen to the national stage since her vocals were featured on Lamar’s album.
“I dreamed of doing something bigger, and this is something. It was the biggest thing that has ever happened in my life,” Barrera added.
This is a collaboration that fuses Marichi and hip-hop.
