LA’s most attractive suburbs welcome new music venues

There are already plenty of great places in LA to watch concerts, but the opening of the new music venue is always great news. And, arguably one of Los Angeles’ most attractive suburbs, talking about Southern Pasadena, is even more exciting. And the best part: one of the coolest concert bookers and promoters in the city is behind a new space, the “hard and independent” Sid The Cat.

San Gabriel Valley doesn’t have a lot of options when it comes to live music, so Sid the Cat Auditorium will meet the needs of music fans of all ages when it opens this fall. South Pasadena’s idyllic small city is perhaps best known since 1915 for its old-fashioned Fair Oaks Pharmacy, which has been sitting at the corner of Mission Street and Fair Oaks Avenue.

And soon, around the corner from the main drug you will find Cat Auditorium Sid, across the street from the South Pasadena Public Library (and there is plenty of parking). The new club will bring life to the former South Pasadena Elementary School, originally built in 1885, rebuilt in 1928 and abolished as a school in 1979. And now we’re going to make Angelenos a school with an up-and-coming band that you should know.

The show will be held in the original auditorium on the school’s East Wing. It is upgraded with a state-of-the-art sound system and can suit up to 500 viewers. Thirsty patrons can find a full bar set up in one of the school’s original classrooms, across the covered arcade and patio.

However, the Cat Auditorium is not the only resident of the old school. This is the fourth place in the upcoming coffee roast The Boy and the Bear, “Craft Pubhouse” District Brewing Co., and most of all, the exciting Michelin-recognized and foodie-like favorite villa tacos.

Sliding in Indie Cred, Sid the Cat has been behind countless concerts since 2015. He defends songwriters and hosting acts such as Bright Eyes, Boygenius, Phoebe Bridges, Big Thief, Jackson Browne, Jim James, Mac Demarco, Moses Sumney, and Ty Segall. So far, they have held shows at dozens of different venues, from Permanent Records Roadhouse and Highland Park Ebel Club to suburban spots such as Ojay Valley Women’s Club and Pioneer Town’s Puppy & Harriet. Earlier this year, Sid the Cat boasts a talented roster that produced Eton Fire Relief profits for fire-affected musicians and reads like anyone in indie rock. Recently, we have properly curated our lineup of free live music at the annual street fair in South Pasadena, an eclectic music festival and arts crawl.

And now the promoter ultimately has its own home. “We always knew we needed our own space to produce the best quality events for our concert attendees. Having a home base gives us that,” said Sid of Kyle Wilkerson, cat co-owner and talent booker. “Our vision is to celebrate music and art in a way that sports is respected and praised.”

Speaking as a music lover and concert lover in LA, Sid the Cat is a local treasure. It’s a breath of fresh air from an era of corporate promoters and algorithm curation. The founders add personal, concrete touches to the live music scene, create custom matchbooks and artist trading cards to enhance the experience with intimate concerts. The company is currently raising funds to offset construction costs through GoFundMe (you can donate here, or immortalize the name with the venue’s bar stool for a cool $5,000).
