Board Cultural Express: LA Metro celebrates the late legendary Nippy Heisle (he turned 40 this year) with a heartfelt tribute that blends transit with deeper meaning.
Starting Friday, August 15th, Metro will drop 12,000 limited edition tap cards as part of the Metro X Culture series, honoring “Agelenos, who shaped LA culture, especially those who started their journey on Metro buses and trains.” One design is a photograph taken by Anthony Pham, and pays homage to Crenshaw & Slauson’s Hussle roots. In another photo, Jonathan Mannion is a visual ode to the city of a bus ride through Watts, where he is a visual ode to the city of tattered city.

“The series at its heart recognizes Transit as a thread of the iconic Angelenos story, including the upcoming Nippy Hustle Cards. Many of these numbers grew up riding metros on buses like 108 and blue line buses. “Through this series, Metro aims to increase its involvement with Tap by amplifying LA culture by introducing stories of true influence and legacy, gathering cards that hold personal meaning for riders, and enhancing its role as a catalyst for everyday life and opportunity in Los Angeles.”
Tap cards will be available at Hyde Park, Crenshaw, Sloughson, Compton, Hollywood/Vine, Expo/Crenshaw Station (and Metro Customer Center), but supplies will continue.
Additionally, the metro will recognize the rapper’s legacy and will temporarily rename the K-Line Hyde Park Station to “Nipsey Hussle Station” near the marathon clothing store’s website. The name changes will continue from Friday, August 15th to Sunday, August 31st.
Heizle, known for his raw lyricism and entrepreneurial spirit, was born Elmias Joseph Asgedom, who concluded community investment, education and economic empowerment across Los Angeles. From Crenshaw to the world, the rapper’s legacy and message (“The Marathon Continues”) is a powerful call to continue to work, build and elevate. He was fatally shot in 2019 at the age of 33.
