After five consecutive days of protests against the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (aka ICE) attack in Los Angeles on June 10, city mayor Karen Bus issued a curfew in downtown Los Angeles, extending from 110 and 10 highways to the point where the 5 and 110 flats merge. However, Bass noted that the curfew affects less than eight square miles (a very small area of 502 square miles that makes up Los Angeles).
Bass said the curfew was introduced “to curb bad actors who don’t support the immigrant community.” Angelenos wants to exercise his right to protest peacefully, but local governments are trying to avoid tension amid federal intervention. Both Gov. Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom have denounced the deployment of US troops into Los Angeles to address recent protests, calling them a move designed to cause fear and panic.
Six days later, the curfew was cut to just eight hours each night between 10pm and 6am, as “crime prevention and suppression efforts” was successful. “The adjustment to a curfew follows significant reductions in violence, vandalism and looting that took place during the immediate escalation of the situation by the Trump administration,” the mayor’s office said. Nevertheless, “LAPD will maintain a strong presence in the downtown area to ensure the safety of residents, businesses and demonstrators,” said LAPD police chief Jim McDonnell.
Many recent (and mostly peaceful) demonstrations have been concentrated in downtown, particularly around the Metropolitan Detention Center and the 101 highway, with multiple flooding of protesters who blocked traffic last week.
Areas affected by the curfew include Chinatown, the Arts District, Skidrow and Fashion District. There, an ice attack began on Friday, June 6th. Curfew orders and recent ice activities have had a major impact on downtown restaurants and businesses, so curfew time should help with that negative impact. (Last Thursday, Music Center venues were exempt from LA Opera and Center Theater Group performances, allowing downtown diners to visit the restaurant as long as they were admitted by 8pm.)

How much is LA Krfew?
After announcing the curfew on June 10th, the mayor of Bus reduced the hours from 8pm to 6am from 10pm to 6am. The curfew will be effectively implemented indefinitely until it is officially lifted. This means that from 10am to 6am, many downtown LA are off limits.
What happens if you violate the curfew?
According to LAPD Police Commissioner Jim McDonnell, if you are in a designated curfew zone between 10pm and 6am and not exempted, you could be arrested. Exceptions will only be made for law enforcement, emergency and healthcare personnel, DTLA residents, people commuting to work with workplaces, and qualified media representatives. Sure enough, on the first night of the curfew, more than 200 people were arrested on charges that included failing to break up and violations of the curfew. LAPD advises anyone who knows someone who has been detained overnight due to a curfew, to contact the Metropolitan Detention Center about their status.

Yes, cities across the country have their own protests in solidarity with LA, including many cities in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Denver, Seattle, Boston, and Texas. And over the weekend, millions of people across the United States came to protests on June 14th.
