LAUSD is committed to protecting students amid immigration concerns – NBC Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Unified School District is taking steps to protect students amid growing concern over President Donald Trump’s harsh immigration stance, district supervisors assured in an interview with NBC4 on Monday.

LAUSD superintendent Alberto Carvalho said he would refuse to enter federal agents who claim to “wellness checks” on students unless there are appropriate documents that the school cannot refuse.

“A judicial warrant signed in that warrant by a judge with the individual’s name is something we need as justified evidence for us to contact and access someone at the school,” Carvalho said. “In addition to the warrant, you will be treated as someone else at our school.”

The district made headlines earlier this month after Homeland Security Investigators visited two schools and conducted what the department said was a “wellness check.” Eventually they were denied an entrance to campus.

Carvalho noted that attendance at two schools was affected following the presence of federal officers due to fear from families that may have undocumented members. However, he praises the district for its protective nature, as student attendance has not declined across the district.

“Our board has passed many resolutions in favour of our values, declaring federal and constitutional laws that protect the students and families of our schools from a personal perspective, as well as legal protection from our citizens,” he said.

The superintendent said the district is following the US Constitution to protect students despite its legal status.

“The Equality Protection Clause declares that all students are entitled to free public education at any school across the United States, regardless of their status of immigration,” he said. Secondly, there is a very important law in education called FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act), a federal law that guarantees privacy and confidentiality. This means that they don’t provide anyone with information about students or their families. This is basically the most important thing if you don’t have parents, if your parents need them, basically Latin and Latin. Children. “

Carvalho confirmed the district’s dedication to educating students and taking safety seriously. He also ensured that LAUSD is a safe space for children and that they can focus on learning and utilizing the resources the district has to offer.

“Schools are a place to get nutrition, education and inspiration,” he said. “Schools should not be a place of fear for our workforce or our students.”
