The Los Angeles Area Transit System will achieve a major milestone on Friday with the much-anticipated opening of the LAX/Metro Transit Center Station, making rail services the closest to Los Angeles International Airport to date, offering travelers a new, carless option to reach the airfield.

Located just east of LAX, the new station will eventually connect directly to the LAX People Mover system, still under construction, taking travelers to the airport terminal area. People Mover is scheduled to open later this year. Until then, travelers will be able to connect with the new transit station’s free airport shuttle bus to reach the terminal. These shuttles run every 10 minutes.

“The wait is almost over, Los Angeles,” Metro Commission Chairman and Los Angeles County Superintendent Janice Hahn said in this year’s statement, with the opening date announced on June 6th of this year. And when Lax People Mover finally opens, there really is an international airport that connects people from within the terminal beyond the metro and into the world. ”

Hearn is one of the top local officials expected to attend the midday opening ceremony along with county supervisors Holly Mitchell and Lindsey Hovas, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts.

The station will be officially open to the public at 5pm

To celebrate the station’s opening, the Metro will offer free fares across the entire rail and bus system from Friday to Sunday.

The Metro will bill a new station as a multimodal transport hub along the Metro K line and expand access between Redondo Beach and Metro E (Expo) on Crenshaw Boulevard.

The K-Line currently runs between Redondo Beach Station and Air/Century Station. The LAX station is still under construction, and northbound K-Line passengers had to take a shuttle bus to reach Westchester station on the K-Line. There, we were able to take the train again through Inglewood and eventually travel to the E-line.

When LAX Station opens on Friday, the K-Line runs seamlessly from Redondo Beach to the E-Line, which includes a stop at LAX Station.

The Metro C (Green) Line, which previously ran between Norwalk and Redondo Beach, now has its western endpoint at the Aviation/Century station, allowing passengers to travel to the K-line and continue south. Starting on Friday evening, the C-line will run between Norwalk and the new LAX Station.

According to the Metro, the new LAX station will also offer a multi-level bike hub with secure parking, a pedestrian plaza and areas for passenger vehicle pickup and drop-off. The property also features 16 Baybas Plaza.

Teasing the station, Metro said the new LAX/Metro Transit Center Station is set for “World Creative Capital, Los Angeles,” providing seamless access to the local light rail system and improving train travel options.
