LeBron James was the first to score 50,000 total points in the NBA regular season and playoffs

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James is on track to rewrite all of his previous definitions of basketball’s lifespan, with the 40-year-old star gaining numbers the NBA has never seen before.

James became the first player to score 50,000 total points in the regular and postseason on Tuesday night, surpassing the mark with three pointers early in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 136-115 136-115 victory in New Orleans.

James scored 34 points against the Pelican after defeating another milestone in his unprecedented career.

“I mean, that’s a lot of point,” James said, shocking his beard. “Obviously, the first thing that comes to mind is where I came from. I picked up games as a little kid, loved sports, and hoped that one day I could play at the highest level. I could do it and really enjoy my career. So it’s definitely an honor. It’s pretty cool to see it.”

James is the top scorer in NBA history, both in the regular season and in the playoffs. Maintaining an epic level of play midway through his record 22nd season, he is separating himself from the other greats of the game. Lakers great Kareem Abdul Jabbar, who played 20 seasons, is now second with a total of 44,149 points.

James got the milestone three-pointer from an assist from Luka Donsic, a bite of trivia that pleased both superstars. Donsic’s arrival in the seismic trade with the Dallas Mavericks last month cheered both James and the Lakers. They look like championship contenders with seven games in a row and 17 wins in the last 20 matches.

“It’s amazing to see him do something like this at this age,” said Donsic, who had 30 points, 15 assists and eight rebounds against New Orleans. “It’s incredibly 50K points. I can’t even explain how sane it is. He could be 70K. You’ll never know.”

The Lakers recognize the milestone at the next timeout, with public address announcer Lawrence Tanter saying, “Women and gentlemen, we’ve all just witnessed history.” James admitted a standing ovation in several waves off the bench.

James has been associated with Vince Carter for most seasons played in NBA history. However, almost every other NBA player following his late 30s finished with just a few of his peak power, but James’ game shows no signs of decline in his 40s.

He averaged 29.3 points, 10.5 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.2 steals in February, playing more than 35 minutes per game for the Lakers, finishing second in the West.

The victory over the Pelicans helped the Lakers improve to 11-2 after winning Don Sic.

James plays in 1,548 regular season games, tracking only Robert’s Parish (1,611) and Abdul Jabbar (1,560). If he chooses to stay healthy and return to the 23rd day record, he will likely outperform the parish next winter.

James also plays the most postseason games in NBA history. He became the league’s career playoff scoring leader on May 25, 2017, when he surpassed Michael Jordan’s total of 5,987 in the Cleveland Cavaliers Eastern Conference Finals game in Boston.

James then became the top scorer in regular season history when he broke Abdul Jabbar’s 38,387 points record during a Lakers game against Oklahoma City on February 7, 2023.

James’ prolific scoring is largely due to the consistency of his metronomy. His performance against the Pelican has led him to score at least 10 points in 1,278 consecutive games since January 6, 2007.

James’ Player Award of the Month in February was his 41st and extended his own league record. He is also the oldest player to win an award in November 2000, surpassing 37-year-old Carl Malone.
