Liberal Church Networks are the story of pushing “climate justice” during Holy Week

First on Fox: One of the world’s leading liberal and ecumenical Christian organizations announced a post promoting climate change activity during Holy Week, sparking criticism from experts who spoke to Fox News Digital.

“The training shows that climate justice is a moral obligation for the Church,” a post on the World Congress website said on Monday that billions of Christians around the world began to observe Holy Week and commemorate the seven days leading up to Easter.

The post “We have collaborated with the National Council of Churches in Bangladesh to explore how churches can do for climate justice for the World Council of Churches (WCC) and held a climate litigation training in Dhaka, Bangladesh on April 11th.”

In a post on Thursday on X, WCC once again said on climate change: “The climate crisis is not silent. Our solution should not be. In the Indian joint seminar, experts are pushing for Nexus’ approach to land, water and food justice.”

“In the polychrys that the world is experiencing now, the role of the church and other faith actors in their contribution to climate justice is more important than ever.” “Our moral voices are needed for urgently needed system changes.”

Last week, the WCC announced that it has debuted a new resource on legal tools for climate justice, focusing on hope for children, strongly supported by its knowledge of how churches can hold financial stakeholders accountable for their role in perpetuating the climate crisis.”

Fox News Digital reached out to WCC for comments.

Dan Turner, founder and executive director of Power The Future, likened the push for climate change into Christianity’s “long history of fighting paganism.”

“It’s not surprising that neopaghans are hiding behind climate change and polluting religion and pushing their agenda,” Turner said. “Most Christian countries have the cleanest air and water and the greatest respect for the planet.”

Gabriella Hoffman, the Independent Women’s Forum’s Energy & Conservation Director Centre, told Fox News Digital that while it is not “unusual” for religious systems to preach “biblical” teachings of “land management,” climate justice plagues the teaching by encouraging them to reject positive human interactions with nature.

“They believe nature will replace people’s needs. Both interests may be balanced and not at odds with each other,” Hoffman said.

Steve Cortez, founder of the American Federation of Workers and senior adviser to the Catholic vote, told Fox News Digital:

The WCC has a long history of political activities on behalf of free causes, claiming 352 church organizations in over 120 countries representing more than 580 million Christians worldwide.

According to NGO Monitor, the organization has “established several highly biased, politicized subgroups.” Part of this is related to anti-Israel efforts and BDS activities.

Last year, the WCC issued a statement in support of the International Criminal Court’s controversial decision to issue an arrest warrant to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in response to fallout from the October 7 terrorist attack.

Shortly after the attack, the WCC issued a statement calling for Underscor.[ing] The need to address the root causes of current conflicts that are deeply intertwined with decades of occupation, the long siege of Gaza, and the systematic violations of fundamental human rights. ”
