D-Chester Sen. Ghazala Hashmi has won the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, according to the Associated Press.
Hashimi, an immigrant from India, said on her campaign site that she is the only candidate.
Hashmi was trapped in a close race with former Green Bay Packers safety Aaron Rouse and former Rikkimond mayor Lever Stony. Hashmi will face GOP candidate John Reed in the state general election in November.
Stony, who was recognized on Wednesday, became mayor of the capital, Richmond, and for decades oversaw the removal of several Confederate sculptures that had been lined up in downtown by the famous Monument Avenue from the Fun district.

More recently, Stony told Virginia Mercury that he effectively works the aisle in the dual role of lieutenant governor to Virginia Senate President.
“We don’t agree with everything. That’s fine. I’ll be a happy warrior. I stand firm in my values, speak out when there’s a disagreement, and find ways to work together when there’s a common ground. Disagreements don’t have to lead to dysfunction.”
Rouse positioned himself as a force to counter the Republican leaders in Washington, writing on his campaign site that he “stopped up at Donald Trump’s Time.”
