A weak storm brought light rain to parts of the Los Angeles area Sunday morning, with potentially strong winds and thunderstorms later that day.
After a period of unseasonably warm temperatures, cool weather and rain are back in the area this week. Joe Schillard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said as of Sunday morning, it was clear along the coast, with light rain falling in central Los Angeles and valleys.
Wet and chilly weather has arrived, as we gather at the 97th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre on a Sunday afternoon. The show will start at 4pm.
Syrado said that although the current weather system expects to have a minimum overall rainfall total, there will be opportunities for thunderstorms to downtown Los Angeles and valleys, mountains and deserts later Sunday. There is also a strong wind advisory, with gusts of winds up to 40 mph along the coast and up to 55 mph for Antelope Valley.
Snow is possible on the mountains on Sunday, including the north of Castatic along I-5.
“Traveling may be difficult,” Syrad said.
Later this week, the National Weather Service predicted moderate to moderate rainfall on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The second storm is coming. The service said there is a very low risk of debris flow and snow levels range between 3,500 and 5,000 feet.
When California experiences a significantly warm winter, a new storm comes.
As of Friday, the state snowmen averaged 85% of this time of year. The lack of rain helped fuel Los Angeles County’s deadly wildfires in January.
