“Lillo & Stitch” team with Tom Cruise and “Mission Impossible” on Monster Anniversary Weekend

“Lilo & Stich” collaborates with Tom Cruise for the Monster Memorial Day Box Office Weekend.

The Disney live-action version of “Lilo & Stich” won a staggering $145.5 million in North American theaters, according to Studio’s estimates, the second largest domestic opening of the following year.

The film is a faithful remake of the original 2002 six-legged alien and Hawaiian girl’s story, and has produced a huge cult following in the decades since. However, the duo were not the younger brother and sister of a well-known figure in the parade of Desney’s live-action remake. This is second only to the $185 million opening for The Lion King in 2019, surpassing all forecasts and shocking box office observers.

“This was over-performing due to the enormous margin,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore.

“Lilo & Stich” surpasses Cruise’s 2022 Top Gun: Maverick as the biggest Memorial Day weekend earner of all time, with global estimates of over $300 million.

Paramount Pictures’ Mission: Impossible – Final Calculations came a long two seconds into the arrival of Ethan’s eighth and (probably) final cruise that he had hunted over almost three years, but it hit $63 million until Sunday, leaving “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

And the spice thriller with Christopher McCurley, a frequent partner on the franchise’s director’s chair for the fourth time, was a global maker of $127 million.

Cruise was the relentless global promoter of his films, and he was the largest cheerleader in the industry to go to theatres. The film, like its premiere of the series, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

“The sight of what Tom and MCQ put on the screen gives off a theatrical cry,” said Chris Aronson, national streaming president of Paramount. “The only product they put out is screaming, ‘This has to be in the theatre.’ ”

Previous film, 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Record Part 1, launched in July at a franchise-high $80 million in five days, but was embarrassed by industry expectations at a distance of $56.2 million over the three-day weekend.

This weekend, last year, when I saw just $132 million in every movie from Friday to Monday at the Memorial Day box office gross, the whole past was blown up. It also came to the top of the industry’s best anniversary in 2013, with an estimated total of $325 million.

Critics were tired of Disney’s live-action and its animated classic CGI remake. Mark Kennedy of the Associated Press called it “Lilo and Stitch.” There were signs that the audience agreed. “Snow White” opened in March at sleepy $43 million, with several similar releases slippery.

However, the film got caught up in a potential love for oddball pairing.

It also promoted a trend that includes PG-Rated Films’ “Minecraft Movie,” which outperforms the normally dominant PG-13 films.

Dergarabedian has honoured the strong leads of films that have put people in theaters, including “Minecraft,” “Sinners,” “Thunderbolts,” and “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” and remain in the top 10 box office gross.

“I can’t imagine a better lineup of movies to light up before reaching Memorial Weekend to get us to the sparks that got us this record-breaking holiday frame,” he said.

Top 10 films by domestic box office revenue

According to ComScore, the list is a factor in estimated ticket sales from Friday to Sunday in US and Canadian theatres, as the final domestic figures were released on Monday.

1. “Lilo & Stich,” $145.5 million.

2. “Mission: Impossible – Final Calculation,” $63 million.

3. “Final Destination: Pedigree,” $19.7 million.

4. “Thunderbolts,” $9.2 million.

5. “Sinner,” $8.8 million.

6. “The Last Rodeo,” $5.3 million.

7. “Friendship,” $4.6 million.

8. “Minecraft Movie” $2.2 million.

9. “Accountant 2” $2 million.

10. “Hurry tomorrow” $740,000.
