Vroman’s Bookstore, a historic independent bookstore located in the heart of Pasadena’s Playhouse Village, has launched its annual summer sale and offers deep discounts to continue celebrating the resilience and loyalty of the community.

The sale will be held from Saturday, July 26th to August 3rd and will be on the second floor of Vroman’s event space. Shoppers can expect to get up to 75% off sticker prices and another 40% off on registers. According to Vroman, all sales are final and the discount may not be combined with other offers.

Founded in 1894, Vroman’s is Southern California’s oldest and largest independent bookstore. The business faced serious challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic and urged the community to plead for the virus in the second half of 2020.

The response from the Pasadena community onwards was overwhelming. Longtime customers placed online orders in large numbers, waiting outside the store to wait in line, launching crowdfunding campaigns to keep the bookstore alive. “All in general [of] my [32] In years there, I had never seen anything like that in my life,” bookstore Stephen Ross said in a 2021 interview.

The bookstore’s survival was not only a testament to loyal customers, but also a testament to Vroman’s own creative adaptation. The store was pivoted by curb pickup, online sales and the presence of strong social media. In a 2021 interview, CEO Julia Cowlishaw explained that the experience is overwhelming and moving.

Summer sales offer another opportunity for patrons to support many credit as an important part of Pasadena’s cultural fabric. Located near the iconic Urth Caffe, Pasadena Playhouse and several local restaurants, Vroman’s remains a gathering place in the evolving village of Playhouse.

Founded by Adam Clark Voman, the bookstore began as an act of love and a leap of faith. After moving to Pasadena in the 1890s, after hoping that the warm climate would heal his sick wife Esther, Voman sold his personal collection of books and used his revenue to open a store. The lifelong philanthropist later donated to museums and libraries, supporting well-known competitors and lending money to start another bookstore.

Vroman’s has won numerous awards over the years, including “Bookseller of the Year” by Publishers Weekly and “Best Bookstore in San Gabriel Valley.” He has been featured in television shows and films such as the 40-year-old Virgin, Modern Family, Parks & Recreation.

Beyond books, the store offers curated sections for jewelry, stationery and gifts, as well as an in-store bar known for its literary-themed cocktails and tasting events, 1894.

Despite the uncertainty of the retail industry and recent real estate developments in the region, Vroman employees are maintaining their hopes.

For those looking to browse discount titles while supporting the cornerstone of the community, Vroman’s summer sales may be more than just a savings opportunity. It’s your chance to keep your local heritage alive.
