Santa Ana rapper Jay Taj has returned an acknowledgment from his hometown following Mayor Valerie Amesqua’s reaction to the city’s anti-ice protests.
The Taj was given a certificate of accreditation in the city council meeting room on June 3, but decided to return it at the city council meeting on Tuesday.
“I continue to thank the council members for this recognition, but I cannot hold it in your signature,” he told Amezcua. “So I came here to bring this back to the city of Santa Ana.”
The Taj tells KTLA 5 that it’s not an easy decision.
“I returned the award to the mayor as a matter of morality. I refuse to see her members when necessary to display the plaque signed by those who insist on seeing me. Her actions raise questions about the meaning of that perception in the first place,” he said. “This is not political. It’s a principle.”

Musicians were not the only resident of Santa Ana who opposed city leaders on Tuesday night. Several other residents spoke during the public comments portion of the meeting, which lasted for several hours and ended at 1:24am on Wednesday.
The outrage follows Amezcua’s scrutiny Facebook post for protesters and her fellow city council members to demonstrate in the city. In the post, the mayor called the protest “pure violence.” The city has reported no significant damage except for graffiti and broken glass on federal buildings.
At a meeting on Tuesday, Amezcua, mayor since 2022, said, “I’m not supporting what’s going on in our city, so if I never responded quickly, my apology.” “I don’t support ice. I don’t want the National Guard in our city.”

The mayor is now facing a call to resign in what she addressed at the end of the city council meeting.
“I recommend that some of you run for offices. I recommend that you sit here for hours and hear people hear what awful person you are… I’m a human.
As tensions continue to rise, some say the mayor’s next move could put her leadership future at risk.
The next city council meeting is scheduled to take place on July 1st.
