Authorities on Thursday repeated restrictions at nine California prisons where privileges were suspended due to a statewide surge in violence and restricted inmate movement.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement Thursday that 12 other prisons remained under lockdown conditions.
On June 12, the CDCR placed 21 prisons in what they called “changed programs.” Inmates were unable to receive visits or call, and prisoners at the state’s highest security agency were limited to cells, except for key services such as legal and medical appointments.
CDCR officials said the lockdown was driven by increased violence and increased drug overdose. According to CDCR data, California prisoners were killed by other inmates this year by other inmates, but 41 people died in “unexpected” circumstances.
Over the past two weeks, CDCR officials said investigators used dogs to search for cells, flushed out video footage and reviewed incoming mail to route out contraband. The search was among other contraband, including 169 weapons and 310 mobile phones, according to the statement.
Restrictions were lifted at a California medical facility on Thursday. Male Colonies in California; California Correctional Facility; California State Prison, Corcoran. The prisoners are being blocked in prisons in the High Desert State. Pelican Bay State Prison; Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran. California State Jail, Los Angeles County. California State Prison, Sacramento. Centinera, California State Prison. Calipatria State Prison; Kern Valley State Prison; Mule Creek State Prison; Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. Salinas Valley State Prison and Sierra Conservation Camp.
