Brandon Boyd’s brothers stood on the steps of the local church where their 38-year-old brother was shot Tuesday and gave Long Beach police body camera footage and 911 calls that could shed more light on what happened in Long Beach. They demanded that the data on the report be made public immediately. November 19th.
“Brandon never imagined they (police) would slaughter him in front of the church he grew up in,” said Tierra Boyd, Brandon’s eldest sister.
“He was peaceful and needed help,” said Tiffany Boyd, Brandon’s sister. “The police decided to use a flash grenade to de-escalate the situation, which led to the shooting death of my brother.”

Police said SWAT, hostage negotiators and a mental health assessment team engaged in a two-and-a-half hour standoff with Boyd.
“After more than two and a half hours of attempting to de-escalate the situation, officers used less-lethal foam rounds and flash bangs as a diversionary tactic to separate the suspect from the firearm. The suspect pointed the gun at the officers. A gunfight ensued between the police officer and the suspect.
“The reality is our officers were very patient,” Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish said the night of the incident. “This speaks to de-escalation, and they tried to do everything they could to safely resolve this situation.”
Mr. Boyd died at the scene. One officer was injured and taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
Boyd’s family said mental health personnel sent to the scene were not actually used to de-escalate the situation.
“There were trained mental health professionals on scene, but they did not interact with my brother,” Tiffany Boyd said.
The family begged police to speak with Boyd and get help.
Instead, two sisters and a cousin were arrested after the shooting.
“Three subjects entered the crime scene and refused to comply with officers’ commands to leave the scene. Two subjects were arrested for interfering with an officer and one additional subject was arrested for interfering with an officer. He was arrested for interfering with a police officer and assaulting a police officer,” a statement from the police department said.
The family demanded that these charges be dropped and that the officers involved in the shooting be prosecuted.
“A multi-stage investigation into this incident is underway,” the police department said. “The LBPD plans to release body-worn camera footage from this incident in the near future. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is also reviewing this incident and, consistent with all officer-involved shootings, investigate I am doing it.”
