The City of Long Beach announced Wednesday that it is making its mattress recycling pilot program permanent.
Residents can drop off used mattresses for free at 970 W. Chester Pl., which is open seven days a week. Discarded mattresses are recycled by the nonprofit Mattress Recycling Council and can be used for other items such as construction materials and carpet padding.
“By dropping off their used mattresses at a 24/7 drop-off location, residents can prevent powerful greenhouse gas emissions, free up City resources for other cleaning efforts, and help maintain a clean and healthy community throughout Long Beach.” “We will help build streets that are more sustainable,” said Eric Lopez, director of public works.
The pilot program began in August 2024 and 397 mattresses were recycled.
In addition to the drop-off center, the Mattress Recycling Council holds collection events on the first Saturday of each month. The new permanent program will replace the Mattress Recycling Council event with a final weekend collection set for December 7th.
Approximately 18,000 mattresses are illegally dumped in Long Beach each year.
