Michael Morgan, a six-time mayor of Camarillo and a dedicated community member, died Tuesday in a car accident, the city announced. His wife, Donna, survived with serious injuries.

According to the Ventura County Star, the couple was on their way to visit their children in Reno when the accident occurred on a highway in Nevada. The city has not released any details about the accident or Donna Morgan’s condition.

Morgan, 77, was first elected to the Camarillo City Council in 1980 and served the city for nearly 40 years until losing re-election in 2018.

Camarillo Mayor Tony Trembley said in a statement about Morgan’s death, “Mike Morgan served our community for many years, both in elected positions and in several non-profit and church-related activities. I have served the country,” he said. “He has made tremendous contributions to our city through his leadership and dedication to Camarillo.”

Morgan was born in Vernon, Texas, in 1947, moved to Camarillo in 1961 and graduated from Camarillo High School in 1965, according to his city biography. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University, Long Beach and a master’s degree in public administration from USC.

He then returned to Camarillo and worked as a county and federal probation officer, retiring in 1998. He and his wife have two children.

Mr. Morgan was recognized at the 2018 City Council meeting for his 38 years of service to the city. At the conference, he said one of his goals when he first ran for office was to make Camarillo one of the greatest cities in the world. Live.

“At the time, our city didn’t even come close to being rated, and now it ranks among the top U.S. cities with a population of less than 300,000,” he said, citing a 2015 report, as reported by the Ventura Star. It is now the 23rd best place to live.”

Camarillo has changed significantly during Morgan’s tenure on the city council, nearly doubling its population from 37,000 in 1980 to 70,000 in 2018.

Morgan cited a desire to slow the city’s rapid rate of development as a primary motivation for his initial candidacy for council management. According to the Camarillo Acorn, shortly after retiring from the City Council in December 2018, Mr. He said these were two of his greatest accomplishments.

He also said he was proud to have been involved in the construction of the Camarillo Public Library building and new police station, as well as the creation of Camarillo’s California State Channel Islands.

“People don’t realize that the city is what it is today because of all the efforts of people. [Morgan]who dedicated 38 years of his life,” the Camarillo Fiesta Association donated to the city. board member Bev Lusk told The Acorn.

Morgan works with more than a dozen community organizations and nonprofits, including the Camarillo Arts Council, the Ventura County Cancer Society, the Disaster Assistance Response Team, the Rotary Club, the Camarillo Fiesta Association, the Camarillo Youth Advisory Board, and American Legion Post 741. I was involved with an organization.
