Longtime Greek restaurant Papa Cristo closed his door on May 4th

Every day it feels like another iconic LA restaurant is closing or struggling. That’s even more heartbreaking why Papa Cristo, a longtime Greek restaurant on the corner of Pico and Normandy, closed the door on May 4th.

Sam’s son Kreis confirmed the news and announced the final day in an Instagram post on April 3rd. “We close this chapter with a heart full of love and gratitude for the incredible community that has supported us for generations.”

Kreis purchased an original Greek import business from his father in 1968 and converted it into a restaurant in the early 1990s. In 2010, Kreis’ daughter Annie joined the family business. On April 1st, the restaurant’s property was discovered on Loop Net at a asking price of $5.2 million.

According to Kreis himself, Papa Crist will live on in some way. “The story of Papa Crist doesn’t end here. It’s time to expand things,” the restaurant owner wrote at the end of his farewell message. The family already has a line of existing herb and spice blends. Additionally, frozen spanakopita and fetafilola wraps are previously available at Whole Foods and Bristol Farms.

Although the counter service restaurant has never reached the level of critical acclaim of some old schools like Langer and Philip, Papa Cristo has long been a beloved and affordable mainstay for Angelenos from the parish of the Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox diocese across the city. Menu highlights include Saganaki, Moussaka, Baklava, Avgolemono and an all-you-can-eat Sunday BBQ spread, which costs $30 per person. And yes, the restaurant is still open for another month. If you want a final taste of Papa Cristo, there’s time for you to go back and forth.

Papa Cristo’s is located at 2771 W Pico Blvd. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 9:30am to 7pm Fridays to Sundays.
