Look at the aftermath of the earthquake near Russia that caused tsunami alerts in the western US

An incredibly strong earthquake struck from the Russian coast, issued tsunami alerts along the Pacific coast, but caused some damage in sparsely-away areas near the epicenter.

KTLA has obtained footage from various parts of Russia in the Far East, including kitchens, hospitals and seaside bluffs in the isolated Kamchatka Peninsula region, during a fierce 8.8 magnitude heartbeat that collided around 11:30am local time.

What is the largest earthquake ever recorded?

Videos taken by residents of a small town in Severo-Kurilsk show violent shaking of about 40 seconds in their kitchen. Local media reports say that around 2,400 residents of the town have all been evacuated.

Though not much damage has been reported in the area, the kindergarten building at Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky has partially collapsed, footage shows. The building was not open when the earthquake struck.

Further footage posted by local health authorities shows surgeons at the Kamchatka Oncology Centre in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the region’s largest city.

Another video shows a portion of a Pacific bluff collapse into the water, sending dust clouds into the sky.

Massive flooding was seen at Severo-Kurilsk, where the town’s port and several buildings were damaged. Local media said a total of four waves had passed through the town.

Elsewhere in the area, two million Japanese people have been told to evacuate after the earthquake. Traffic congestion was seen as having many scrambles to reach the highlands. The Fukushima nuclear power plant, which was heavily affected by the 9.0 magnitude tremor that struck Japan in 2011, was temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

The tsunami waves arrived at the Japanese coast, but were smaller than expected. No major damage has been reported there.

Even further away, Gridlock was also seen in Hawaii as tsunami sirens were blaked and people were rushed out of the coast. All Hawaiian Islands recommendations were lifted by Wednesday morning.

Tsunami alert explained

According to a US geological survey, the earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean at 4:25pm on the daytime at 4:25pm, about 80 miles southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatki, and was one of the most powerful ever recorded. Several major aftershocks were recorded after the first earthquake, but despite the waves of tsunamis that hit Japan, spurring evacuation in Hawaii and moving across the Pacific Ocean, which strengthened warnings in Northern California, there were no reports of substantial damage.

Just before 1am Wednesday, National Weather Service officials reported that the tsunami had reached the Northern California coastline and appeared on the Arena Cove Tide Gauge. Along the Southern California coastline, where the first “Tsunami Watch” was upgraded to a “Tsunami Advisory” just after 7pm, the NWS appeared most concerned about the area north of Point Conception.

The tsunami recommendation was expected to remain until Saturday due to strong currents and wave threats, but was cancelled by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) officials on Wednesday morning.

Only small swells were seen at SoCal on Wednesday.
