Winds are expected to continue to subside this week, but it will likely be a short-lived recovery for the region. The risk of severe fire weather returning to Los Angeles and Ventura counties is increasing starting early next week. The region also faces continued risks from extremely dry conditions and lack of rain.
The Eaton Fire, which has ravaged Altadana and surrounding areas, was 65% contained as of Friday morning. The fire has not grown in size since January 10, when the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection announced it was at 14,117 acres. Since then, crews have been working to surround the fire, secure protection and prevent the fire from spreading beyond the front line.
Similarly, the size of the Palisades Fire remained listed at 23,713 acres since Sunday, as crews from all over the country poured into the fire area and established a perimeter around it. Containment of the fire has increased from 11% on Sunday to 31% as of Friday morning, and firefighters are confident that nearly a third of the fire’s perimeter will remain beyond containment.
The confirmed death toll from the fire has risen to at least 27 as the search for the rubble continues.
