The Los Angeles City Council will vote for a domestic violence service package Friday morning, including the creation of an executive task force.
“This is the biggest investment in domestic violence services in Los Angeles history and expands shelter and housing support for survivors who are not too frequently able to travel,” said Councillor Katie Yaroslab Ski said.
The proposal submitted by Yaroslavsky would also create a Domestic Violence Control Order (DVRO) Enforcement Task Force to remove firearms from abusers and strengthen the restraining order, according to the council’s office. a news release said.
“This package is to ensure that survivors have both resources to escape abuse and enforcement to prevent further harm,” Jaroslavski said.
Her office provided the following statistics on domestic violence in Los Angeles:
Last year, 15,851 survivors contacted the domestic violence hotline for the shelter, but only 10% of people were able to access the shelter bed. Over 40% of the unmoving Angeleno experience domestic or intimate partner violence, which has become an important driver of the homelessness. The DVRO Enforcement Task Force will formally formalize coordination between the LAPD, the city attorney and other law enforcement partners, ensuring that the restraining order is enacted and guns are removed from abusers.
