Local leaders celebrated the opening of Los Angeles’ biggest permanent support housing development on Thursday.

The project, named 600 San Pedro after its address, is a 17-storey mixed-use building with 302 units, all “a permanent supportive home designed specifically for interim homes transitioning to permanent homes with services, ultimately dealing with homelessness, homeless service provider Weingart Center and developer-related California said in a news release.

The home will be built on a 1.12-acre lot in downtown Los Angeles and will replace a parking lot, marking the largest 100% supportive housing development in LA.

LA Mayor Karen Bass and county superintendent Hilda Solis were on hand to celebrate the opening.

“Los Angeles needs us all from government to nonprofits to the private sector and urgently cooperates with the homeless crisis by building more housing and providing life-saving services,” Bass said. “We would like to thank Winetote in connection with their continued commitment to building more permanent support housing so that people coming in from tents and camps can move into homes and communities where they can live a healthy and full life.”

Solis says “safe, dignified supportive housing is key to ending homelessness,” and she plans to continue to drive similar projects.

“Working with partners like Weingart Center, we bring more resources to the Skid Row community and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to come indoors and thrive,” she said.

As part of its efforts to help people thrive, the building’s amenities “promote safety, happiness and healing,” and the developers listed “pet relief areas, community gardens, career centers, libraries, fitness areas and on-site laundry facilities.”

Additionally, each apartment is furnished with furniture and includes electrical appliances and air conditioning. WeingartCenter “provides services that include individualized on-site case management, mental and physical health care, substance use services, employment and vocational training support, educational support and more.
