Los Angeles nurse was released from ice custody without charge

Sightly criticism from local officials and advocates United said that Los Angeles nurses and community activists who were released from federal custody on Saturday after their arrests were released from federal custody, but sharp criticism from local officials and advocates was released.

Amanda Trebach, a registered nurse and member of community group Unión Del Barrio, was in custody Friday morning during monitoring immigration enforcement in San Pedro. Her release came after more than a day of demonstrations in downtown Los Angeles and a call from an elected leader who described her as illegal and politically motivated her arrest.

Union del Barrio said Trebach was detained around 6am on August 8th and is taking part in the peace patrol of the port area outside the Terminal Island staging area. The patrol, run by community volunteers, documents and monitors immigration enforcement activities.

Witnesses and videos from the scene show a masked individual identified by organizers as a federal agent, putting Trebach down on the street, handcuffed and placed in an unmarked black van. The group said agents mistakenly claimed she assaulted a federal vehicle and claimed she was targeted for her political activities.

Councillor Tim Makosker called the incident “clearly illegal and unconstitutional” and said it violated a 9th Circuit detention order restricting attacks on certain migrants. He reported his arrests to the port police and noted that Terminal Island was under their jurisdiction.

A US citizen, Trebach works as a nurse in Watts, Compton and South Central Los Angeles. “She didn’t break the law,” Union del Barrio said in a statement. The group praised members of the Harbor Area Peace Patrol for recording a video of the arrest, saying the footage helped secure her release.

News of her detention quickly spread, prompting a rally outside a federal detention center in downtown Los Angeles on Friday evening. The protest escalated when Los Angeles police declared an illegal assembly citing “the offensive nature of several protesters,” closing Alameda Street between Temple and Aliso Streets. Police said officers were surrounded trying to contact organizers and items were thrown into the vehicle. By 11pm, a small group remained and lined up the bridges on the 101 highway.

“They ran at her and she dropped the poster,” Cynthia Avina said Union del Barrio. “The agents claim that she attacked them with that poster and we know that it’s not true. They are making false claims to threaten us and try to stop the work we’re doing.”

Her arrests have emerged amid a new wave of federal immigrant attacks throughout the region, with critics saying they are violating court-ordered restrictions. Several cities, including Long Beach, have joined lawsuits in which Los Angeles County and the city of Los Angeles challenge federal enforcement actions.

Encouraging members to rallies for Trebach’s release, National Nurse United called her freedom “a testament to her ability to organize resistance and solidarity against the ongoing attacks by the Trump administration on our lives and livelihoods.”

Federal authorities have not provided further details regarding the status of Trebach’s detention or release.
