A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot by police during a shootout in Los Angeles on Thursday, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred in the area of Hooper Avenue and 92nd Street around 6:40 p.m. A police officer on patrol noticed a male suspect spray-painting a wall and stopped the vehicle to investigate.
When the officer stopped, a second suspect appeared and produced a handgun. Police said the suspect, a 15-year-old boy, then fired shots at officers.
The officers then got out of the car and fired back at the boy. The man was struck, but managed to get into a waiting vehicle driven by the man along with the property damage suspect and leave the scene.
Police say “scuffle with multiple parties” led to quadruple stabbing
That led to a chase that ended with the vehicle being stopped in Compton.
All three suspects were arrested. The driver was identified as 20-year-old Kevin Diaz. The two remaining suspects, including the boy who was shot to death, are both 15 years old and their identities have not been released.
A loaded .45 caliber handgun and shotgun shells were found inside the vehicle.
The injured boy was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition, police said. The other two people were not injured and were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer.
No police officers were injured. Additional details were not immediately released.
