After being bustled with her new slim-down physique by NBA fans, Luka Doncic revealed that despite being a perennial All-star, she is being criticised for losing shape.
Los Angeles Lakers security guards were asked by Craig Melvin on July 30 if his notable weight loss this summer was a response from NBA fans and critics to the outside noise about his body.
“Obviously, I try not to read too much. I just try to concentrate,” he said. “I think I was still a pretty good basketball player back then. No matter what people say.”
The 26-year-old Slovenian superstar was just 25 years old, considering Doncic was a five-time All-NBA selection and led his former team, the Dallas Mavericks, to an appearance in the NBA Finals.
He sees changes in his diet and training plans as part of his evolution as an NBA star.
“I think it was the next step in my career,” Doncic said today. “Finally, I’m only 26 years old and I’ve come a long way, so it was a good step in my career.”
Listed at 6 feet 6 and 230 pounds last season, Doncic showed off his fit look in the cover story of Men’s Health, published on July 28th. The Lakers star and his trainer detailed how to turn a man’s health into slimmer in just three months of eating and training routines.
“I think me and my team just tried a few new things,” Doncic said today. “Various foods, different practices.”
He also said he was not taking weight loss pills.
Doncic, a basketball genius in Europe before being drafted by the Mavericks in 2018, shared that he took a break from the sport for a while.
“I actually gave up on playing basketball for a month, and it was a bit challenging because I’ve never done it in my life, but it was good,” he said. “Mentally, basketball is something I’ve played for the rest of my life so I’ve never forgotten how to play basketball in a month, so I’ve tried other sports. I think that’s a good thing.”
Luka Doncic has been featured as the Los Angeles Lakers’ latest star and has said that trade with the Dallas Mavericks is a shock, but as a member of the Lakers, he is “proving everything.”
Doncic joined the Lakers this season in one of the greatest deals in NBA history. ESPN reported that the Mavericks had “big concerns” about Doncic’s “constant conditioning issues.”
Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison, during a speech at a press conference in April, reported Doncic’s conditioning and work ethic were factors in trade.
“Luka is, as we all know, a very talented player,” Harrison said, according to Athletic. “We’ve all seen him drop the most points when he’s probably not in the best conditioning, so he can do that, that doesn’t matter.
Reports say the Los Angeles Lakers traded Anthony Davis for the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Donsic.
Doncic responded to the report in an interview with ESPN’s Marika Andrews.
“It’s just sad that he’s talking about now,” he said of Harrison. “I’ll never say anything bad about him. I just want to move on. Fans, my former teacher, I always keep it in my mind. That’s when I move on from there.”
His physical transformation is part of a major summer that could be worth more than $200 million for Doncic, who is eligible to sign a long-term deal with the Lakers on August 2nd. He declined to comment today when asked about it, saying that NBA rules prohibit him from talking about it prior to the decision.
