Lyft offers a new nationwide service specifically designed to make ridesharing more accessible and accessible for seniors.
Starting May 5th, Lyft Silver will be available as a riding service. LyftSilver offers a more simplified product design to attract older users, such as those who have given up on driving due to poor vision, hearing loss, or reduced reflexes.
The company says new services will come as the number of Americans reaching retirement age continues to rise, while the number of seniors using ride services is stagnating. One in five Americans are over 65, but Lyft said their demographics are only 5.6% of their total user base.
Lyft is working with local partners for the program, including Los Angeles-based healthcare provider Altamed.
“For many senior Altamed patients, the lack of transport poses a major barrier to accessing healthcare,” the organization said in a statement. “Lyft’s commitment to providing convenient and accessible ride-sharing options is a game changer for Althamed patients in Los Angeles County, ensuring they receive timely and appropriate medical care.”
Altamed said it will work with Lyft Silver to provide vehicle for medical appointments for Viva Gold members of patients over the age of 62 who manage multiple chronic diseases.
Citing 2024 census data, Lyft says transport access also plays an important role in the mental health of older adults. Those who report having adequate transportation options are three times less likely to experience loneliness compared to those who do not.
“Transportation is key to human connection,” Lyft officials said.
