After days of heavy rain in Southern California, the Duke in Malibu (a restaurant that survived two fires in two months) has been closed again. This time, it is due to damage caused by recent landslides.
The famous restaurant at 21150 Pacific Coast Highway had to close during the Palisades fire recently.
The Palisades erupted in the evening, and Duke served as a shelter for the victims of the burning wounded, including both civilians and firefighters.
Currently, Palisade’s burn scars have closed the restaurant door and employees have resigned from work.
“I mean, if you think about it, Triple Wammy,” Duke general manager Jimmy Chavez told KTLA’s Chris Wolf. “We are very fortunate to survive the fire. We cannot take it for granted – how many neighbors have lost their homes, but this time it was a landslide that took us out. is.”
The area around the restaurant is covered in mud and crews have been tirelessly trying to clear it over the past few days, but firefighters say the danger continues.
Despite the rain halting and the sun shining, authorities said the hillside could continue to slip as the burns are saturated.
“The Las Flores Canyon here has been turned into a river that has come to our parking lot and flooded almost every entrance we have,” Chavez said. “We were pretty fulfilled in 2011, but this is much worse.”
In addition to these damages, Caltrans placed a soft closure on the PCH between Chautauqua Boulevard and Carbon Beach Terrace on Saturday morning.
According to Caltrans, one lane in that section of the PCH has a 25 mph limit and is open only to emergency responders, contractors and utilities.
